Dec 3rd - Dana Ruh & Milou
So this is it, the grand finale to one of riffraff’s most successful years in its 8 year history. For those of you that have attended every single one we have to take off our cushions, masks, tashes, plastic noses, ears etc and salute you. It’s been such a fun year and we have enjoyed experiencing it with our ever riffraff faithful and all of the artists that have attended and smashed it.
So where do we go from here then what is going to close the year off for us?
Well from being in the position that we are where the summer months are spent in Ibiza listening and spotting out any artists that need to be recognised and seen by the riffraff smog monsters, each year an artist that blows our minds behind the decks is usually invited to the Dungeon. This year one DJ did just that to raffs head honcho’s Lee Pennington and Graeme Stewart, not only that but this DJ pulled everybody out the main room in Privilege to hear her twisted up front music in the Coco Loco room, so it was a no brainer when Lee turned to Graeme and asked “What do you reckon? Will she kick the shit out of the dungeon or what?” that she would be invited to do just that for you all.
So we would like to welcome the mastermind behind her own record label Brouqade that will be going on tour next year and releasing records from the likes of Cassy and Rahadoo, its Andre Galuzzis partner in crime and now considered to be the queen of Berlins Underground scene we are honoured to welcome DANA RUH into the Dungeon where her dark hypnotic sounds is going to warp you and certainly educate you all into the future of our scene and where it’s going and its going deeper than ever… Just how we like it.
Dana Ruh has not only released on formidable labels such as Einmaleins, Cocoon and Ostgut Ton, but together with Cocoon's Andre Galuzzi she also launched their new label ARAS in early 2011 and began a new monthly night at the world famous Panorama Bar…. That’s right this girls nailing it right now and you lucky scrinsers are going to get to see her tear your favourite venue up.
For whatever its worth over the eight years in striving to bring you the best cutting edge music then trust us on this one you WILL love her and you will be zoned out by her music and taken to a whole new level.
So that’s guest number one this month but guest number two is a DJ that’s been tearing up the Seal Pit since the very early days of the Zoo Project and one that to this day remains one of the organisations most solid residents. We would like to welcome back to riffraff but this time to play in our spiritual home of the Dungeon the soulful lady that is making waves right now MILOU!!!
As a resident of The Zoo Project, the most talked about party in Ibiza, she is holding her own against some of house music’s greats and has warmed up for so many fantastic artists but not only considered to be a warm up DJ this girl has also played main slots on numerous occasions in the Seal Pit and I am guessing that majority of you all have witnessed her play.
Technically superb, fresh and distinct, her sound is clearly influenced by a whole lot of traveling, a bucket load of stories, and an even larger stack of records. Time spent living in the USA introduced her to the tough underground spirit of places like New York and Detroit, while the other side to her persona craves the tranquillity and nature of south East Asia.
Relentlessly swaying hips, thoughtful party music, almost sweetly she draws her bow from House to Techno as a guest of Europe’s top clubs and festivals, including Raum Barcelona, BerMuDa Festival, Berlin Tempelhof, Urban Artforms Festival. She is an ideal DJ to end the year with on a party vibe for ya’ll.
Joining the girls on this evening in the dungeon is two other Zoo Project residents and longest running riffraff servant’s Trapez recordings Gow and Cubism & Fade Recordings Mr Lee Pennington.
Both artists as you know are experts in closing the dungeon which was stated in a recent resident Advisor review when the boys had to follow House Pioneer Marshall Jefferson.
Also in the dungeon is new *riffraff resident from Schatten Recordings and local artist Philip Stirzaker a boy that truly deserves his place in the riffraff camp after all the hard work he has put into the Teesside underground scene over the past five years when running his own Expression parties.
Room Two this month features “This Way Up’s DJ competition final”. Local event This Way Up directed by DJ / Promoter Adam Mcglouchlan has brought the final to riffraff where two up and coming DJ’s will be battling it out against one another. The judges panel will be made up of promoters and DJ’s from *riffraff, Right On, This way Up and also some special guests.
The two DJ’s battling it out is Rob Alderson and Chris Emmerson and they will be playing between 11pm and 1am so please come down and support new up and coming talent.
Starting the proceedings upstairs and to this last event of the year is KRISTOFFER and then joining him is riffraff’s other two newest residents that we would like to welcome into our home MILLHOUSE and MAKORMIC, two boys that you will have seen making noise around the Teesside area in recent years and in Makormics case further afield at partys like Idiosync Manchester and Public Life London. Then last but not least NEVER least is Capture FM’s main man and Recycle Records artist MARK GRAHAM, another long serving riffraff resident.

Deep within the cold, dark, smog fuelled streets of the UK’s North Eastern industrial town that is Middlesbrough, a small group of individuals are unperturbed by what some may call the misfortune of being born in a place with lack of opportunities, prospects or healthy lungs. This band of merry few is of contented mind and unruffled spirit and they were brought together through what can only be described as musical co incidences, like minded beliefs and the fact that they are all a bunch of professional wreck heads who can’t say no to a good time.
It is these inquisitive Pioneers that have went out into the world beyond the black cloud of Teesside to educate themselves with aesthetically pleasing, harmonious sounds, then return bringing back with them the ingredients and knowledge which is fused with their own innovative artistic ideas to produce contemporary electronic styles of music.
This electronically engineered 4/4 racket of eclectic sounds can be heard once a month in a low key, dark, sweaty dungeon of dreams where the Shepherds herd their flock that has grown in numbers over the past 7 years and are exposed to artists from around the planet whom have helped influence this movement. The underground chamber where this monthly party is held lies beneath the Medicine Bar which is regarded as Middlesbrough’s epicentre of dance music, and it is here where *riffraff has made their home.
The collective rabble implies a punk philosophy to their marketing techniques and a DIY attitude to putting on parties, this rebellious attitude of turning its back on glitzy VIP nightclubbing where champagne drinkers turn up their noses toward the clubber is setting an example to how music should be heard. They believe that you don’t need a fancy plastic venue with a dress code; they believe you need one where everybody counts, where everyone is equal and where the love of the music can bring people together from whatever walk of life they are from, a place where all inhibitions are forgotten and all egos are left at the door and that everybody is ready to have a good time.
